CASE STUDY
Redesign Marine Exhaust Gas Boiler Destroyed by Metal Fire
PLANT LOCATION | Singapore |
FACILITY DESCRIPTION | VLCC Oil Tanker |
BOILER TYPE | Exhaust Gas Boiler |
BOILER CAPACITY | 4.5 [Tonnes/hour] |
STEAM CONDITIONS | HP: 6.5 [Bar] @ 240 [°C] |
Conditions:
An exhaust gas boiler fitted in the uptake of a trading VLCC motor tanker was destroyed beyond repair by a metal fire, stranding the fully laden vessel in a foreign port. The high value of the cargo and the size of the ship meant significant down time losses.
It was quickly established that the boiler manufacturer was no longer in business and that the finned tube was of a non-standard specification. None of the available tube suppliers stocked the finned tube required.
Design Boiler was engaged to provide an urgent solution to the problem and quickly responded by identifying and sourcing alternative finned tubing that was available on immediate delivery. In-house computer modeling resources were utilized to redesign the Exhaust Gas Boiler so as to be able to accommodate the alternative tube and fin specification that was readily available. Fabrication drawings of the revised design were then produced.
