Power Stations & Utility Boilers

Design Boiler has been actively involved in providing specialized technical support to power station and utility operators for many years. Examples of Design Boiler’s specialized expertise which relates specifically to the power station and utility sector include:

Boiler Design: As part of the project FEED analysis for a new 250 MW coal fired power station Design Boiler prepared a reference boiler design for the project. The reference boiler design was used to prepare the initial boiler

Boiler Circulation Analysis: A 150 MWe coal fired power station boiler was plagued with sporadic furnace wall tube failures. Design Boiler was engaged to investigate and solve the problem. A circulation analysis of the boiler was undertaken using our boiler design software and this identified a defect with the feedwater preheating system that was forcing the economizer to steam under certain conditions. A steaming economiser can cause major circulation problems if a boiler is not properly designed to receive steaming feedwater. Design Boiler remodelled the boiler circulation using its boiler circulation software and established an acceptable feedwater heating modification that effectively addressed the problem. Read more.

Design of Solar Feedwater Pre-Heater: Design Boiler was engaged to design a solar feedwater preheater for the boilers of a 1400 MW power station. The concept involved heating boiler feedwater through a solar collector which was heated with solar tracking heliostats. Design Boiler finalized the design and submitted it to the power station owner.

Boiler Efficiency and Acceptance Testing: Our personnel have been involved in plant efficiency and boiler acceptance testing to demonstrate plant performance for contract verification purposes. We also have extensive experience using ASME, ISO and British Standards acceptance testing methods for both fired and HRSG boilers.

Sagging Economiser Tubes: Design Boiler was engaged to investigate and solve the cause of sagging economizer tubes in a large power station boiler. The investigation found that an operational problem at startup was restricting flow through the economizer and causing its tubes to sag. The boiler startup instructions were modified and the problem was rectified. Read more.

Pulveriser Optimisation: Poor pulveriser performance can cause problems with Electrostatic Precipitators (ESPs) and baghouses. This can also result in poor combustion, high carbon in ash levels, furnace slagging and in conjunction with burner problems can induce critical heat fluxes that can potentially cause furnace wall and superheater tube failures. Design Boiler is experienced in re-commissioning and optimizing many types of pulverizers. We are able to provide personnel to conduct performance tests and provide definitive instructions on how to address operational problems.

On Site Boiler Design Training: We have presented our Boiler Design Principles course to many power station sites. The course is designed to provide graduate engineers very specific knowledge on fundamental boiler design which is not presented in conventional tertiary facilities.

Design Boiler’s broad range of specialised boiler design and testing services, along with its computer modelling resources are available to provide strategic technical support to power station and utilities.
