Marine & Offshore

Design Boiler has a long association with the marine and offshore sector. An operating tanker stranded at sea or an offshore production facility having issues with its steam supply, can impose massive financial impacts on the operation. Problems with marine and offshore boilers can be complex and need well-resourced and highly trained personnel to address.

We are experienced in working with boilers in the marine and offshore sector. Examples of our expertise that relate specifically to this sector are discussed below:

Oil to gas fired conversions: Design Boiler has carried out numerous design reviews as required by Class for converting existing oil-fired boilers to gas firing for operation on Floating Production Storage & Offloading [FPSO] facilities. More details on our work in this field can be found in the Marine Boiler – Oil to gas Conversion Firing case study.

Mud and Steam Drum Attemperation Coil Redesign: Design Boiler have redesigned attemperation coils for marine boilers on FPSO installations to increase the boiler load range over which the superheater temperature can be controlled when firing gas. These units have been installed and have worked effectively.

Investigation into steam drum sloshing: Design boiler has undertaken steam drum water level sloshing analysis for deck mounted HRSGs which were fitted to a very large LNG FPSO. The concern was that the boiler could be subjected to spurious low drum water level trips during rough seas and bad weather. Specific vertical baffling which were designed and installed within the steam drum to address the problem have been very effective.

Boiler explosion analysis: Design Boiler was engaged to investigate the cause of a catastrophic boiler explosion on an operating vessel. More details relating to this investigation may be found here.

Diagnosis of high superheater steam temperatures: Design Boiler has investigated the cause of high superheater steam temperatures that were limiting the maximum output of two boilers on an LNG tankers when firing gas. This enabled the problem to be addressed by modifying the burner quarls.

Review of marine steam reticulation systems and boiler corrosion issues: Design Boiler has also carried out extensive investigations into marine steam reticulation systems and resolved problems with boiler corrosion issues with deck mounted boilers.

Design Boiler’s wide range of specialised boiler design services and computer modelling resources are available to diagnose and troubleshoot boiler problems in the marine and offshore sector.

Our personnel are fully trained to BOSIET & HUET systems for immediate mobilisation to any offshore location.
